The phrase appears on an epitaph in a church museum, this guy was a 'Kurfürstlich-brandenburgischer Postmeister zu Perleberg'. He lived from 1645 to 1687

...why didn't you say so? One more sentence in your question along the lines "Does anyone have another suggestion than 'postmaster'?" would have saved the whole discussion. And what's wrong with postmaster anyway? Why is it not edifying enough?
Yes, as I have been working as a translator for 13 years obviously post master would have been my first choice, I just thought it was improbable in the context and that someone may be able to offer a more illuminating/edifying suggestion. Thank you for yours!
