German to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - History /
German term or phrase: Unteramt
In Dürrwangen gab es eine Revierförsterei und Dürrwangen war auch für kurze Zeit im 18. Jahrhundert Sitz eines Unteramtes. Seit den 20iger Jahren bis weit in die 70iger Jahre hinein war Dürrwangen ein Zentrum der Forstpflanzenanzucht.

Referring to a district of Balingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Short description of its history for a tourist publication.

I'm a bit lost, really. LEO has 'dependent office' and others, but I don't think they fit.

Possibly 'sub district office/authority' or similar?? Many thanks for any help.

English translation:Unteramt
Explanation:
My first thought was subdistrict, but an Amt (where it still exists) is already subordinate to a district or Kreis. I would avoid an English term and just explain the German term in a footnote. Clients understand that administrative divisions differ from country to country and cannot match 1:1.

agree  Catherine Atkinson (meets criteria): Amt is a historical term for a 'jurisdiction' or bailiwick (run by justiciary or bailiff). I agree. Leave German term and short explanation in brackets.
