agree  RobinB: OK, although the technical term used in economics and statistics is actually "reentrants" (with or without a hyphen) to the labo(u)r force. Given the formal/legalistic nature of Stephen's text, this technical term may be more appropriate.

agree  Richard Benham: This is OK, or why not "resuming their careers"?
1 hr
  -> Thanks! In a different context, I'd say your suggestion is better than mine, and I don't mean to quibble, but "resume" suggests that they just pick up where they left off, without the need for a bit of extra help as is the case here

neutral  Richard Benham: Fine, but...could suggest workers who have been on strike.
26 mins
  -> True, but I was thinking along doctor_suz's lines, and wondered if they meant mothers returning to work after x years after having a family, etc.

neutral  Steffen Walter: Might be ambiguous in that it may also refer to employees returning to work after sick leave, for example.
51 mins
  -> In that case it covers all possible variations ;o) Is the German not a little ambiguous too? But, as with Richard, it's a fair point - thanks.

reentrant

Explanation:
I did a job on labor force demographics for a US state and this was the term (reentrant to the labor force). Can't say for sure if it'd work with UK English, but probably.

career re-entrant

Explanation:
This has been discussed under http://www.proz.com/kudoz/601133;
I think this is still an option, when considering those who are returning to their originally-chosen career.
