Bei der Anwendung verschiedener Modelle flexibler Arbeitszeit ist eine Ausdehnung der täglichen Normalarbeitszeit über acht Stunden und der wöchentliche Normalarbeitszeit über 40 Stunden hinaus möglich (z.B. Viertagewoche, Gleitzeit, Einarbeiten in Verbindung mit Feiertagen, durchrechenbare Arbeitszeit).
Voraussetzung dafür ist regelmäßig, dass die durch die Ausdehnung der Normalarbeitszeit anfallenden Gutstunden innerhalb bestimmter Fristen wieder ausgeglichen werden. Auf diese Weise reduziert sich die Verpflichtung des Arbeitgebers zur Abgeltung von Überstunden.
