I guess the only question I have here is whether this refers exclusively to being terminated or whether this can be used in the more general sense to being granted a leave of absence from work, being laid off, etc.

According to the Siemens Wörterbuch Personal- und Bildungswesen, freistellen is offcial absence due to temporary reassignment, day-release, exemption.

Explanation:
Strictly speaking, a 'freistellung' is being made redundant or laid off - in other words not sacked or booted (in many types of contract, the only way to terminate the job contract is by laying someone off).
However, Kim is also right because the term in use sometimes also means a period of absence. Perhaps it might be worth checking with the company exactly how they are using the phrase, as in common use it is slightly ambiguious.

P.S. as they say \"beginnenden Freistellung\" this seems to imply that the \'Freistllung\' will also at some point have an end - otherwise they would have just said \"Datum der Freistellung\". So the implication here seems to be that it is indeed more like a leave of absence.

Garden Leave
"Garden leave" is where an employee has given, or been given, notice of termination and the employer has asked the employee not to attend the office or undertake any work for the balance of the notice period. The Courts have long recognised that the placing of employees on garden leave for a reasonable period is a legitimate way of protecting those interests which in law employers are entitled to protect: their confidential information, customer base, and employees.
Eine direkte deutsche Entsprechung gibt es meines Wissens nicht, weil die deutsche Rechtschreibung ganz anders geartet ist. Vielleicht kann man es wie in meinem Vorschlag genannt umschreiben.
