German term or phrase: aus der Luft gegriffen
yet another idiom - does anyone know the equivalent in English ? It means something which is 'invented'. The only context I can give is that these 'inventions' are allegations considered to be totally untrue.
Thanks in advance for any help

snatched out of the blue sky

Explanation:
'created out of thin air' is more akin to 'made something out of nothing' while 'snatched out of the blue sky' is a totally unfounded guess or even a calculated falsehood
