German term or phrase: lebendig-moderne
I don't see how to join living + modern in English, or is it idiomatic? And I guess "wat" is a typo for "war", isn't it?

In seinen Anfängen wat das lebendig-moderne Kuching am Sarawak River eine chinesische Handelssiedlung.

In its beginnings, the lebendig-moderne Kuching on the Sarawak River was a Chinese trading settlement.

the lively, modern Kuching
Explanation:
It's not good German either...

I wouldn't use a compound adjective here.

Thanks for all the input everyone. This should work fine with "city of" as mentioned.

neutral  Richard Benham: One does not use articles with the names of cities. "...lively, modern Kuching" is fine! Or "the lively, modern city of Kuching".//THings like that happen! I just hid my answer by accident and had to re-enter it.

-> Richard, you're right, of course. I meant to write "city of" but ended up changing it ... without removing the article.

vibrant modern-day

Explanation:
Instead of "In its beginnings" I would suggest perhaps using "Originally" with "vibrant" for lebendig. Other possible synonyms for lebendig might be thriving or bustling.

neutral  Richard Benham: I tend to think "modern" here means "modern" as in "up-to-date", rather than just "now". "Vibrant" is good, though. How about "modern, vibrant".

Explanation:
It would be good to explain what exactly is lively and modern.

modern, bustling

Explanation:
I would also reorder:
The bustling, modern city of Kuching had its origins....

Soryy, but my previous answer, with the same suggestion, was accidentally hidden when I tried to add a note. It no longer seems possible to unhide an answer.
