I think it's meant to be each particular staff member's view of life, so I think Johanna's on the right lines re student yearbook entries. Can't even begin to think what I'd put if I had to provide my own motto - how cringe-making!
Hi Claire - all these quotes remind me of student yearbook texts(where the actual write-up is prefaced by a (mostly funny)motto/statement meant to give a synopsis of the individual's personality. That would explain the abbreviated or adapted quotations!
