This is especially important since it subsequently says that he was persuaded not to accept the presidency (er erreichte bei einem Gespräch mit dem Kronprinz dessen Verzicht), but of course the right verb for Verzicht here depends on whether he actually became president in the first place or not. Was he persuaded to resign or persuaded to decline the presidency, or the nomination for presidency? |
