Das ist die Überschrift über einem Eingabefeld für ein Captcha. Wie heißt das auf Englisch? Security prompt, captcha prompt? Neben dem Eingabefeld steht "Enter the characters as shown in the picture below".

Explanation:
Nowadays the spammers make more and more trouble for site administrators as they submit spams to forums, guestbooks, and registration forms and so on. To protect ourselves against spam robots it’s a good solution to extend our forms with a Captcha image. This image contains a ***security code*** which is only readable for humans and not for robots.

Cultural difference
The instructions are there, so it is not considered necessary in English to label the Eingabefeld. I guess the German mentality is that everything has to be named.

Asker: I guess I'll go for security code. The problem here is that this is the translation of an order process, and it's technically not possible to leave the label empty in English...

jccantrell: Yeah, I would not use 'captcha' unless the German used it. I believe it is a trademark name.

LittleBalu: I wouldn't use captcha either although the trademark application was abandoned on 21 April 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha)

-> Thanks. Re 'security check', this strikes me as rather too general for this specific context, i.e. it conjures up images of passport control and similar situations. // Agree. See my original comment concerning the redundancy of naming the box.

The purpose of the Captcha is to prevent (or greatly hinder) automatic inputs to something (like opening e-mail accounts, whatever) by spammers and the like (Internet terrorists). It is based on the assumption that the graphic cannot (at least not too easily) be read and interpreted by a machine (OCR software) so only a human can do it and enter the right text.
As everyone knows by now Captcha (I guess), just saying Captcha is enough (unless is is considered some for of advertising this particular product). The Captcha method is so new that I guess it does not yet have an official generic term to describe it.
