agree Ken Cox: yeah -- I recently discovered that electronics/IT types have pirated the terminology of ecology for their own use; you can read about 'biotopes' of electronic devices, etc. Of course, IT jargon has also become très chic in management circles...

This has a lot to do with an IT team's philosophy, including the involvement of everyone in the overall mission rather than outsourcing bits of work here and there - at least that how your context sounds to me.
