Can I translate ,,gegenläufige (Kosten)" here as "differing (costs)"?

Clarification request(s) and response
Armorel Young: 7:04pm Feb 26, 2008: It's not the costs themselves but the Kostenverläufe that differ - in one case the costs rise with the Intensitätsgrad and in the other they fall - it's the trend of the costs that is in different directions; I'm still looking for a neat way of putting it
Vittorio Ferretti: 4:25pm Mar 4, 2008: I am sorry, but "proportional" is not a qualitative but quantitative adjective, and means a linear function.

naja, in this case you could also say 'opposite cost trends' -- as your text explains, the cost of preventive maintenance is directly proportional to the scope of PM, while the cost of servicing is inversely proportional to the scope of PM.

neutral Armorel Young: I don't think that conveys the fact that one set of costs goes up while the other set goes down

disagree Kim Metzger: Yes, "without Ghits" is strong indication that it's not used in the English language.

disagree Vittorio Ferretti: this is "umgekehrt proportional", so if one cost doubles, the other halves; that is not the issue of the text.

-> 'inversely proportional' doesn't necessarily have to be linearly proprotional, but you have a point, which is addressed by my added note.
