German term or phrase: Tauschlaufwerk
Ein Tauschlaufwerk ist ein Laufwerk, wo Dokumente nur temporär für den Zweck des Austausches zwischengespeichert werden.

Cannot seem to find a dedicated term for that in English. Is it File Exchange Drive / Shared Drive / Marketplace Drive ?

Thank you in advance!

English translation:file exchange drive
Explanation:
an alternative to "data exchange drive".

This probably does not refer to a removable disk. It's a drive on a network where files are saved by one user and then accessed by another user. They are used in LANs for exchanging large files (DB dumps etc.) to avoid large files being inadvertently left lying around clogging up storage space. Admins often delete the contents of such drives regularly (in my last employer it was done once a month after warning all users).

It's primarily an organisational division, rather than a physically separate device. In the cases I'm aware of these days it's usually created via software (i.e. it's a virtual drive) rather than by hardware (a physical drive).

data exchange disk/drive

Explanation:
I'm not sure that this is a standard designation for such a beast, but it's what instantly popped into my head and makes perfect sense to me. As an experienced translator once told me, "If you don't know the exact word for it, translate it so that it is perfectly understandable".

agree  Jaime Hyland: and understandable it is. Not "disk" though. The drive could be a lot of things other than a disk.

neutral  Alexander Schleber: It's the disk that is exchangeable, not the data. My comment was not right - I had reacted too quickly and did not read the context. But I am still doubtful about your answer.

-> Ah, in that case I'd use "temporary swap drive".

exchangeable disk drive / Bernoulli box

Explanation:
Bernoulli box => may not be a currently applicable technbology anymore. This used to be an exchangeable disk drive at the beginning of the 90s.

neutral  Jaime Hyland: I don't think they're talking about a physically movable drive. They're quite possibly talking about a virtual drive on a LAN mapped to a drive letter with a colon (e.g. "H:)

-> In that case it might be called a RAM drive.
