These are the attributes required for a UK 'registered design' (Geschmacksmuster) as in my last ProZ.Com answer. See the UK Patents Office website.

Regd. designs are in a bit of an intellectual property backwater. The terminology is NOT always the same as for Eng. trademarks: 'originality' and patents: 'novelty' and 'inventive step', NOR for heraldic crests and coats of arms.

It would be wrong to equate the terms and lump together all of the intellectual property concepts.
