Linguistically I suppose names are the most widespread type of loan word. How many children across the globe are named Alexander or Julius/Julie/Sheila after famous generals, or John/Johnan/Ivan/Jean(ne)/Joan/Jane or Maria/Marie/Mary after famous religious figures? In English we name our dogs Rex and Fido as well as King and "Old Reliable" regardless of the respective Latin meanings being the same as their English counterparts. I have a Hebrew first name, a Norwegian last name, and both my parents were native Anglophones! How many women are now named Mae Ling or Jacqueline or Brittany? |
