Livestock / Animal Husbandry
German term or phrase: festliegend

Weiss jemand, was damit gemeint sein koennte?

downer cow syndrome
Explanation:

Notes to answerer

Asker: maybe milk fever for Laktationsparese?

inability to rise/to standing up/unable to rise

Explanation:

Festliegen = inabilityto rise (as in parturient paresis), paresis, recumbency
(Dictionary for Vetrinary Sciences and Biosciences, Roy Mack, Paul Parey Scientific Publishers [hardback])

Milk fever = parturient paresis

For example:
Bovine postparturient paresis, parturient paresis, hypocalcemia
Milk fever
Symptoms:
A weak, trembling cow is first seen. Localized spasmodic muscle contractions may cause a mild increase in body temperature. The heart rate is often elevated. The heart rate remains elevated but the temperature declines with progression. In advanced stages the most common symptom is a "downer" cow that is usually unable to rise when stimulated. An affected cow will often have its head turned into its flank. If left untreated the cow will lie down on her side and stretch out, thus predisposing her to bloat. The cow will become progressively more depressed until she is unresponsive and comatose, with dilated, unresponsive pupils.

Hypocalcemia is a metabolic disease occurring most
commonly about the time of parturition in adult females
and is characterized by inability to standing up, general
muscular weakness, circulatory collapse and depression
of consciousness (Radostits et al., 2007). Hypocalcemia
develops as a result of the sudden drain of calcium to
colostrum at the onset of lactation, resulting in a
tremendous challenge to the cow's ability to maintain
normal calcium levels in blood. Milk fever is the clinical
manifestation of hypocalcemia and the decreased plasma
calcium content is accentuated in affected cows.

agree  mbrodie: unable to stand/get up - could be for a number of reasons, best to go with this one
2 hrs
  -> Many thanks mbrodie!

disagree  Harald Moelzer (medical-translator): This may be a symptom but there are refs showing that 'Festliegen' = 'Gebärparese' = parturient paresis; e.g see: http://tinyurl.com/yfshp4v
3 hrs
-> Plese see my notes above. I agree with you that "Festliegen" is a symptom, but not that it is the disease per se.

neutral  Cetacea: You are right, the animal is unable to get up, but the technical term is "downer cow". Also, it's not a symptom but rather the result of parturient paresis.
4 hrs
-> Thanks! Please see my note above where reference is made to "Festliegen" as being a symptom, however I see your point re. "Festliegen" being the result of parturient paresis.

agree  Cetacea: On the contrary, "recumbent" ist exactly the same as "festliegend". It just seems that I come across "downer cow" more often. See also http://www.fawc.org.uk/reports/dairycow/dcowr057.htm

disagree  Cetacea: The problem is inability to get up. Depending on the cause for the condition, the animal may actually be able to stand once it's been lifted using appropriate gear./No, it's unable to get up. Not the same thing, as any vet/doctor will tell you.
8 hrs
-> If the animal needs to be lifted, it's unable to stand.

Festliegen - parturient paresis

Parturient paresis is an acute to peracute, afebrile, flaccid paralysis of mature dairy cows that occurs most commonly at or soon after parturition. It is manifest by changes in mentation, generalized paresis, and circulatory collapse.

--------------------------------------------------

The term “downer cow” is frequently applied to a mature dairy cow that is still recumbent 3 hr after calving despite treatment for hypocalcemia (see parturient paresis in cows, Parturient Paresis in Cows). A second type of involuntary sternal recumbency is encountered less commonly in cattle of any age under conditions not associated with parturition and for which the most likely etiology is trauma. Downer cows that are able to actively crawl are often referred to as “creepers” and are considered to have a more favorable prognosis than inactive animals. The cause of the recumbency is, more often than not, elusive even to an experienced clinician. Furthermore, inexperienced clinicians may miss an obvious cause if they do not adopt a systematic approach to diagnosis.
