A drag leash is a specific kind of dog leash used in dog training; it typically has no handle loop (keine Handschlaufe) so that dog feet do not become tangled in it and so that the handle does not snag. Shorter drag leashes are used in the home for puppy training (owner can make his/her own by removing hand loop from old leash). Drag leashes for field training are often longer and used for correction and control. Nylon, cotton (see German Yatego web references) and leather (see US Leerburg reference) versions are available. A retractable (Flexleine) leash has a housing at its end; if it falls to or is placed on the ground it tends to bounce around behind the dog and snag on objects; therefore, it is not a good choice for a drag leash.

Die Schleppleine wird gerne in der Erziehung von Hunden eingesetzt, die beim Spazierengehen weglaufen und nicht freiwillig wieder kommen. Aber auch bei jagenden Hunden findet sie Verwendung.

Die Schleppleine ist im Gegensatz zur normalen Leine sehr lang (10 Meter sollten es schon sein). Der Hund soll damit erstmal das Gefühl von Freiheit haben. Entfernt er sich aber und kommt nicht zurück oder läuft plötzlich los, weil er einen Hasen gesehen hat, hat der Hundeführer durch die Leine immer noch die Kontrolle und kann den Hund stoppen.

Eine klassische Übungssituation: Der Hund hat sich einige Meter vom Hundeführer entfernt und wird gerufen. Kommt er, erhält er eine Belohnung und ein großes Lob, kommt er nicht, wird er konsequent an der Leine herangeholt. Irgendwann begreift er, dass freiwillig kommen viel angenehmer ist und wird das dann hoffentlich auch ohne Schleppleine machen.
