After consulting a number of books on equine anatomy, there still is no clear answer to the question: What exactly is the English term for *Unterkieferast*?

Of course it is a part of the mandible, it's the front part of the mandible and we—as well as the horse—have 2 of those wonderful Unterkieferäste.

Here one of my sentences:

Neben der Form spielt die Lage der *Unterkieferäste* zueinander eine letzte bestimmende Rolle für die Wahl des Gebisses.
