German term or phrase: Weiterbildung vs Schulung

Can someone pl tell me two diff terms that i can use for both of these words? Don't they just mean "training"? However, I need 2 different terms as the text requires it.... pl read the following lines from the text:

"Ermöglichen Sie Schulungen und Weiterbildungen (heading)

Geeignete Weiterbildungsmaßnahmen führen zum einen dazu........

Schulungen können einerseits...."

P.S.: I have seen another proz entry for these terms. But the answer given by the responder "employee training and development" is not really sounding satisfactory.

itla: With Rosa on this. It is absolutely commonplace for companies to encourage key employees to refine their academic skills by attending university-level courses (as an example) and to pay for this continuing education.

I like to use training sessions for schulungen, and I found a reference here for weiterbildungen possibly being programs

For this sentence, "Geeignete Weiterbildungsmaßnahmen führen zum einen dazu" you could write "advanced training programs",

Then, in the other sentence you quoted in the discussion, look more carefully at "bei ihnen". Does not bei ihnnen refer to the schulungen? Then that would imply that Weiterbildungsmaßnahmen is not necessarily seperate from the schulungen, but rather can be incorporated into them. In that sentence, I would say that schulungen could again be training sessions, and then it says that these training sessions could either be part of initial training, or advanced training programs.

There used to be an Institute of Training and Development in the UK until it merged with the Institute of Personnel Management to create the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. So 'Schulung = training/training course' and Weiterbildung = development
