Seriously though: It sounds pretty stupid in German, but I suppose you have been asked for a translation, not for literary criticism. And with the stuff about "prägt jeden Jäger..." the tone seems to be set -

| Note from asker to answererThanks Nicole. (and Hilary)(and everyone else for brainstorming with me). In the end I used "as a life-style choice", but the brainstorming confirmed my original gut feel. (from a North American perspective, to be sure.)
