agree BrigitteHilgner: maybe also election-related advertising material

  -> another good choice, Brigitte.

neutral xxxFrancis Lee: "general election ..." would be confusing (UK-speak for Bundeswahl)
33 mins
-> I agree. That's why I put it in round brackets. "general" is the usual translation for "allgemein" but it's a bit confusing, so "of a general nature" or something like that might be a better option here.

election mailing

Explanation:
For the UK at least, a broad term would be "election mailing" and the specific term for candidates'/parties' leaflets saying "please vote for us" is "election address".

Also note that it is best to avoid any combination starting with "general election", as this could be understood in many countries as relating to just that (a "general election" is a nationwide election to all seats of a national parliament).

\"Marketing\" definitely doesn\'t fit in this context and I wouldn\'t be happy with \"advertising\" here either.

canvassing in connection with elections

Explanation:
In this context I like "canvassing". What do the others think?

neutral xxxFrancis Lee: "canvassing" involves personal appearances; too specific here

disagree Ian M-H: no, not canvassing - that's orally seeking support, for example by knocking on doors and talking to voters

all other election campaign advertising

Explanation:
(assuming that the context makes it clear)
All "Wahlwerbung" is "allgemein", after all, but you could say:

election campaign advertising in general

If you Yahoo! the phrase \"election campaign advertising\", there\'s even two hits from The Guardian!

actually, the allgemein bit could be \"mass exposure\" (e.g. billboards, TV ads as opposed to one mail per household)
