German to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Mathematics & Statistics | | German term or phrase: bestandzuverlässig | Im Ergebnis wird die Lagerbuchführung als Bestand zuverlässig im Sinne der Inventarisierung bezeichnet, wenn die Anzahl der Abweichungen im Vergleich zu den vorgegebenen Bedingungen klein genug ausfällt.
IMHO "Bestand zuverlässig" is a composite adjective and should be written as one word - which I then can't translate!
TIA

| | Clarification request(s) and responseefreitag: 7:28am Nov 29, 2007: No, your interpretation is wrong. I think the source text might rather lack an additional "als":"Im Ergebnis wird die Lagerbuchführung als Bestand als zuverlässig [...] bezeichnet", (maybe there are other ways of Lagerbuchf.?),but I'm not sure about this. Rod Darby: 8:04am Nov 29, 2007: yebbut - I can readily believe I'm wrong, but how would you then translate "als Bestand als zuverlässig" (in this sentence)?
TIA, Rod efreitag: 8:16am Nov 29, 2007: You should read the words grouped differently: "Im Ergebnis wird die (Lagerbuchführung als Bestand) als zuverlässig bezeichnet, wenn..." How did you translate "Lagerbuchführung"? How "Bestand"? efreitag: 8:20am Nov 29, 2007: "Keeping the stock book as an inventory is considered reliable, if..." might be a hint, but I have no special knowledge of inventory terminology. Rod Darby: 8:41am Nov 29, 2007: I translated "Lagerbuchführung" as "inventory accounting system" here and "Bestand" can be a wide variety of things. My own attempt here (the whole sentence) is: "As a result, the inventory accounting system is described as being quantity-reliable for stocktaking purposes if the number of deviations is small enough in comparison to the pre-set conditions." (OK, not great literature, but...).
I earlier had to translate: "Mit diesem Modul ["Stichprobeninventur"] wird im Rahmen der Testmethode Sequentialtest die Bestandszuverlässigkeit der in XXXXXX [Name der Software] realisierten Lagerbuchführung getestet." I turned this into: "This module is used to test the reliability of the stock position reported by the XXXXXX inventory accounting within the framework of the sequential test method."
I have given up on "Bestand", I just write whatever seems to fit the context.
P.S. thanks for all your help - why don't you make it an answer so I can give you the points? efreitag: 8:52am Nov 29, 2007: On reading your comment, I begin to think that my initial remark might have been unjustified. I see that the composite adjective you suggest appears in a nominalized form. The composite adjective should however be "bestandszuverlässig", then. Rod Darby: 11:59am Nov 29, 2007: yes, yes, "bestand*s*zuverlässig" it would have to be - seems even Wirtschaftsprüfer aren't unfehlbar...

| | stock reliability | Explanation: Ok, this leads me to translate "Bestandszuverlässigkeit" as "stock reliability", which means the quality of correspondance between sampled inventory and actual stock, which in English seems to be called stock reliability. This does however not seem to be used as an adjective, so you might have to do some rewording.
