German term or phrase: Dreisatzaufgabe
A Dreisatzaufgabe is a question (e.g. in an intelligence test) of the type:-

21 Lastwagen transportieren 35 Tonnen Abraum an einem Arbeitstag. Wie viel Tonnen Abraum schaffen in derselben Zeit 15 Lastwagen?
or

2 Kühe fressen an einem Tag 48 kg Gras. Wie viel kg Gras fressen 5 Kühe in 6 Stunden?

What do we call that type of problem in English?

I'm actually not an awful lot the wiser - I accept that this is technically the correct answer, but I'm not convinced that the term is widely understood. However, "algebra problem" or "reasoning problem" seems too general, as the reference is to a quite specific type of problem. I used "rule of three" in my translation, although with some reservations.

reasoning exercise/puzzle with three variables

Explanation:
I don't think we have a specific term for this kind of brain teaser. If you need to coin one, then maybe something like "reasoning exercise/puzzle with three variables".

agree  Paul Skidmore: certainly when I was at school in the UK in the 70s and 80s we didn't have a specific word for this type of algebra / reasoning problem

I'm not entering this term as an answer because I don't know if it would be "widely understood" in the UK.
