permeable (flanged disc)

Explanation:

I have no expertise in this area. Web research suggests that a flanged disc is a form of valve - i. e. a mechanism that may or may not allow substances through.

"The casting process must not include an intermediate cooling stage (by means of a permeable flanged disk) as this can lead to slag inclusions or water vapour cavities."
As a discussion entrant said, the parentheses are confusing - I'm assuming that "by means of" is correct because "intermediate cooling" suggests a deliberate action, so it's not a question of the substance being allowed to cool down by accident due to a leaky flanged disc valve.

Is intermediate cooling usually done by opening a kind of window in the flanged disc, perhaps?

"Permeable" avoids having to specify what is being allowed through - as opposed to, say, non-watertight or non-airtight.
