Walking around Berlin, this weekend, I saw exactly what I believe the client was talking about, many made by Rittal. Because of the deadline, I followed Rittal's pattern, but I think "slip-on enclosure" likely would have been acceptable, too. Thanks to all for your thoughts and help.

Die Firma Rittal bietet "Stülpgehäuse" für Schaltschränke an, umschreibt das aber im Englischen. Würde auch, wie von RosiePinhorn vorgeschlagen "slip-on enclosure" verwenden oder "enclosures for slip-on installation".

Agree w/William, überstülpen is ~ synonymous with drauf/aufsetzen; i.e., it's probably some sort of add-on cabinet (part) that goes on top (top-mount...)

For what it's worth ... there are slip sheets/trays or inverted trays in packaging technology, which in German are called Zwischenlagen (slip sheets) and Stülpdeckel (slip trays or inverted trays). So slip-on enclosure cannot be completetly wrong.

I would stick with "slip-on enclosure", as it does google and people will have an idea what it looks like and means. From the description given I cannot imagine it to be soft, so a kind of 'Gehaeuse' is probably more precise.

At least one major German maker of switch cabinets/enclosures calls a "Stülpgehäuse" an "enclosure with open base"
