This is from a style guide text, but the sentence in question refers to a program based on QuarkXPress. Perhaps my brain isn't firing on all cylinders this morning, but I can't get my head around the "der" after the "dpi".
Does this simply mean that the output size of high-resolution files shouldn't be any more than 300 dpi?

The idea is to use pictures of the right resolution AND the right size. If the dtp package has to resize the picture it will mess up the dpi, which might then fall below the 300 dpi required for printing, and vice versa if the picture is saved at the right size but the wrong dpi.

Angenommen Sie haben ein Bild in der Größe 800 x 600 Pixel und wollen es als Papierabzug in der Größe 13x9 cm drucken. Dann gilt folgende Rechnung:
1 cm = 0,3937 inch, folglich sind 13 cm = 5,118 inch und 9 cm = 3,543 inch. Bei einer gewünschten Bildqualität von 300 dpi (Dots per inch) müßte Ihr Bild also die Größe von
5,118 inch X 300 dots = 1.535 Pixel in der Breite
3,543 inch x 300 dots = 1.063 Pixel in der Höhe
haben. Da Ihr Bild aber in diesem Beispiel nur 800 x 600 Pixel größ ist, würde es in der Ausgabegröße von 13 x 9 cm an Schärfe verlieren. Es würde "pixelig" aussehen.

Explanation:
Hi Ian,
it means that output is *only* 300 dpi (for Feindaten).
If you say it should not be more than 300 dpi, it could be misunderstood (then it could be 100, 200, etc. which is not the case).

otherwise generally dpi means dots per inch, similar to a few other measuring systems like , pica or pixesl, or LPI ( lines per inch) and so on....
