German term or phrase: längerfristige
In a German medical report, patient has chest pain and underwent many tests, including transthoracic echocardiogram (TEE):

"Es wird eine längerfristige transthorakale Echokontrolle empfohlen."
"Empfehlung: Längerfristige transthorakale Echokontrolle."

My question is, would this recommendation mean that the test itself should be conducted in a manner where it would take more time, perhaps giving more detail, or does "längerfristige" here just mean that a follow up test should be performed sometime in the long-term future? Since I am not a native German speaker I am not sure here.

Thanks,

Stephen

Explanation:
I strongly suspect that the author referred to a series of follow-up tests to be performed over a longer period. Perhaps "recommended long-term follow-up with transthoracic echocardiograms to be performed at regular intervals"?

agree  sibsab: that would be my understanding too.

agree  casper: Yes, that's the idea. (Saw your answer only after I had posted mine.)
18 mins

agree  lirka: that's the idea, but I'd say "regular ( or long-term) transthoracic echo[cardiography] follow-up recommended". It means that the patient should come for an echo every year or every 6 months in the next, say, 3 years ( not 10 years, that's langfriestig)
5 hrs
  -> Yes, that's it.

agree  Ilse Schwender: the recommendation is to have the TEE again and again for a longer time!

Explanation:
Your second assumption is correct, viz."that a follow up test should be performed sometime in the long-term future".

Example sentence(s):
  • This probe provides excellent two-dimensional echocardiographic images and may allow long-term echocardiographic monitoring of ventricular performance. (J Am Soc Echocardiogr 1997;10:728-37.)
