German to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical: Cardiology / Echocardiography
German term or phrase: keine Al.
This is a medical report on the results of an echocardiography:

"Normal weiter rechter Ventrikel, linker und rechter Vorhof normal weit, MV, TV, PV o.B., keine Al. Kein Perikarderguss."

And here it is again in a different medical report:

"Aortenklappe mit durchgehend nachweisbarer Separation der Klappentaschen, keine nachweisbare Al."

Since the term comes at the end of a sentence each time, I cannot tell if the second letter is an "L" or an "I". Any help would be much appreciated!

aortic insufficiency
Explanation:
this might be it, if the abbreviation is AI, not AL.

I used aortic insufficiency in my translation, but aortic regurgitation is also a valid option, so I will enter both into the glossary. Thanks to everyone for your help. It was very much appreciated.

agree  Steffen Walter: Four synonyms: aortic insufficiency, aortic regurgitation, aortic valve insufficiency, aortic valve regurgitation. Cf. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/aortic-valve-regurgitation/... and http://www.insideheart.com/aortic-valve-insufficiency.html

no [evidence/signs of ] aortic regurgitation

Explanation:
AI stands for Aorteninsuffizienz, but we call it 'regurgitatio'n rather than 'insufficiency' in English.

neutral  Merry Foxworth: while I have seen aortic regurgitation, I have also seen aortic insufficiency plenty of times.

-> perhaps, strictly linguistically, but you won't see insufficiency in cardiac context in real-life native EN reports

I disagree with lirka: as stated in my peer comments, there are at least four equally valid variations in English: aortic insufficiency, aortic regurgitation, aortic valve insufficiency, and aortic valve regurgitation.

Reagrding your added comment, lirka ("you won't see insufficiency in cardiac context in real-life native EN reports"), there are plenty (native) examples that tell a different story. See, for example,

Are you sure?

Please compare to sources quoted below. More citations upon request...
I do agree, however, that *regurgitatiion* is used more frequently.

Example sentence(s):
  • Aortic insufficiency (AI) is generally regarded as a contraindication for mechanical circulatory support in children
  • Presenting pathology was aortic insufficiency in 114 (50%) and aortic stenosis in 116 (50%)
