German to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical: Dentistry / Dentistry
German term or phrase: übergehen in
"Das Zahnfleisch besteht aus der freien Gingiva - dem Zahnfleischsaum - die in das Mundhöhlenepithel übergeht."

General information about teeth and periodontal disease.

I'm a little uncertain about how to translate "übergehen in" here. My current tentative translation is as follows:

"The gingiva consists of the free gingiva, or unattached gingiva, which merges into the oral cavity epithelium."

I'm not 100% sure whether "merges into" would be correct. I have seen that "übergehen" can mean "descend". Would that be more appropriate? Please let me know what you think, and TIA for your help.

Not an easy decision, and I thank you all for your help. But I think "passes into" will work quite well in this particular context. Thanks again everyone!

which changes over into the.....

Explanation:
I think merges is quite allright also, but I would not use descend in this sense.
You could also use "graduates into".

adjoin

Explanation:
Merge might work, but I think the sense is that they are adjacent to one another, hence 'adjoin'.
