  -> Many thanks, Ingeborg!! "to fit" may as well be "anpassen" - however, there is a specific emphasis on the "auf(passen)", which should be reflected in the English term as well IMO (at least it made the German author create a rather strange word... ;-))

The verb requires the preposition onto, as Harald mentions correctly. Passen = to fit; Auf = onto.
So please read "to fit .. onto .."
