agree  Ramey Rieger: I would put them all in the gerund: diagnosing, monitoring, alleviating or compensating for.......

  -> Thanks - that's what I was envisaging too.

agree  Rosa Paredes: I think this is a good way to avoid any confusion that may arise from using 'compensation'.

@ Lirka:

H! My references here point to the fact that these terms are used as "official terms" by the EU. Therefore, I wouldn't want to improve them (unless that is the declared task).
With regard to your concern of "conception etc.", I copied the part from the directive (see below) which shows a different formatting and clarifies the use of the words a bit more.

For certain terms, you can certainly use different verbal forms (in non-related texts) but even then, the -ing form might not always be appropriate.

see:
COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 93/42/EEC of 14 June 1993 concerning medical devices
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:...

Quote:

"1. This Directive shall apply to medical devices and their accessories. For the purposes of this Directive, accessories shall be treated as medical devices in their own right. Both medical devices and accessories shall hereinafter be termed devices.

2. For the purposes of this Directive, the following definitions shall apply:

(a) 'medical device' means any instrument, apparatus, appliance, material or other article, whether used alone or in combination, including the software necessary for its proper application intended by the manufacturer to be used for human beings for the purpose of:

- diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment or alleviation of disease,

- diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, alleviation of or compensation for an injury or handicap,

- investigation, replacement or modification of the anatomy or of a physiological process,

- control of conception,

and which does not achieve its principal intended action in or on the human body by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means, but which may be assisted in its function by such means; "
