Medical - Medical: Health Care / Medical billing
German term or phrase: Sekundärdiagnose vs. Nebendiagnose
In a German medical bill, under "DRG-Daten", there are four columns:
DRG-Hauptdiagnose, Sekundärdiagnose, Nebendiagnose, and Sekundärdiagnose.

Up until now, I've been translating "Nebendiagnose" as "secondary diagnosis" in English, but apparently in German system there is a difference between "Nebendiagnose" and "Sekundärdiagnose".

Here is an example of one entry:

DRG-Hauptdiagnose S02.1
Nebendiagnosen: S00.1, S02.4, S02.2
Sekundärdiagnosen: S01.84!, S01.84!

I cannot represent the chart exactly in this question, but it is also quite confusing. I do notice the "Nebendiagnosen" only have one numeral after the decimal, the Sekundärdiagnosen have two and then an exclamation point.

Appreciate knowing the difference between these 2 terms and what the English equivalents are.

Sincerely,

Stephen

primary, secondary, additional diagnoses
Explanation:
In the document "The Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) to Adust Payment-Mechanisms for Health System providers", I have observed three types of diagnoses:

- primary (Hauptdiagnose)
- secondary (Sekundärdiagnose)
- additional (Nebendiagnose)

Hope this helps.

secondary diagnosis vs. concurrent diagnosis [or: comorbidity]

Explanation:
The principal diagnosis for a claim is the condition that occasioned the admission.
...

A secondary diagnosis is a complication or comorbid condition that appears in addition to the principal diagnosis.
http://www.ahd.com/definitions/ip_diagnoses.php

A patient may have a primary diagnosis and a secondary diagnosis. A primary diagnosis is the reason that the patient sought healthcare. A secondary diagnosis is another condition the patient has that is diagnosed by the healthcare provider.
A secondary diagnosis falls into one of two categories. These are comorbidities and complications. Comorbidity is a concurrent condition that coexists with either the first-listed diagnosis or the principal diagnosis. A complication is a condition that has developed as a result of the first-listed diagnosis or the principal diagnosis.

Concurrent Diagnosis is any additional or concurrent diagnosis, e.g. the patient is admitted with abdominal pain, but has a history of diabetes. Diabetes would be a concurrent diagnosis.
