German to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical: Instruments / Orthopedics
German term or phrase: Halter
This is from a press release about an orthopedic equipment trade fair.

Zahlreiche Neu-Entwicklungen in der Orthopädie lassen aufhorchen. An dieser Stelle sind laut Dr. XXX, „Individualknieendoprothesen mit allem für und wieder, Wegwerfinstrumente wie Hüftraspeln, intelligente Halter und ihre Fortentwicklung für das personalsparende und auch teils schonende Operieren zu nennen.

We've had this word before in a medical context:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/medical/177714-h...
but I don't think it has the same meaning this time. I've come across " holder" and "retainer" as possible translations, but I don't know whether they're correct.

And why would they be "personalsparend" and "schonend"?

Elsewhere, the text talks about "intelligente Implantate", intelligent implants, containing electronics that provide doctors and patients with feedback about the implants' effectiveness.

English translation:(smart) retractors
Explanation:
There are a few references on the Net about surgical instruments that incorporate sensors, e.g. to detect excessive stresses. Some of them are in journal articles that require a subscription for access. However, 'smart retractors' seems like a good possibility - see e.g.

"In order to validate the biomechanical model, a ‘smart’ retractor has been developed. A brain retractor is typically used as an extra set of hands for the neurosurgeon during surgery.....Four force sensors have been laid out along the retractor about 8mm apart, center to center, such that a distributed load across the surface can be measured."

Notes to answerer
Asker: I think you're right. Retractor seems to have several different translations depending on what part of the body it's used for, but one of them is Halter: http://www.dict.cc/?s=retractor. Thanks!

Note to reference poster
Asker: Thanks very much - "holder" may well be the correct answer, but your references include needle holders, medical record holders and body restraints. I need to know what it means in the specific context of orthopedic surgery.
