Science - Medical: Pharmaceuticals / Anaesthetics
German term or phrase: Abtransport
"Da die Lokalanästhetika nicht am Wirkort abgebaut werden, ist ausschließlich die Abdiffusion und der Abtransport auf dem Blutwege für die Beendigung der lokalen Wirkung verantwortlich (EVERS u. HAEGERSTAM, 1983 ) ."

From a text about anaesthetics. I can't make head or tail or "Abtransport" (or "Abdiffusion", for that matter), and the dictionaries do nothing to enlighten me. TIA for your help.

transport (away)
Explanation:
Since the local anaesthetics are not degraded at the site of action, both diffusion and transport by the blood away from this site are soley responsible for the termination of the local effect

Ah, now I see how it works. Actually, I could probably understand the words in isolation, but I couldn't figure out their meaning in the sentence (the phrase "auf dem Blutweg" confused me a bit). You've helped clarify it. Thanks very much - appreciate your help.
