German to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical (general) / Clinical Drug Investigation
German term or phrase: Erbmaterial
"• Es wird eine Blutprobe entnommen, um Ihren HBV-DNA-Spiegel, das heißt die Menge des ***Erbmaterials*** des Hepatitis B Virus in Ihrem Blut, zu untersuchen."

From a clinical drug investigation text. I can't find "Erbmaterial" in any dictionary. There is a discussion on LEO that suggests (not absolutely conclusively) that it might be "genetic material", and I guess that's a reasonable possibility. Or what about "hereditary material"? Or is it just a synonym of DNA and thus redundant? TIA for your help.

genetic material
Explanation:
seems to me the best thing to use in this context.

Or as you suggest, you could just leave it out..."a blood sample will be taken to measure the amount of HBV DNA..."

"hereditary material" is fine literally but not appropriate in context.

I love it when a clearcut solution emerges. Genetic material it is, then! Many thanks James and all the peer graders. But thanks also to the others who contributed, and commiserations to Ingo, to whom I would also give points if it were possible. Appreciate everyone's help.

genetic material

Explanation:
I would use genetic material as, according to Wikipedia, "Genetic material is the material used to store genetic information for a living organism. For all currently known living organisms, the genetic material is almost exclusively DNA."

That they mean DNA is obvious from "HBV-*DNA*-Spiegel".

Or simply use "amount of Hepatitis B virus DNA".

genome

Explanation:
How does chronic hepatitis B virus cause liver cancer? In patients with both chronic hepatitis B virus and liver cancer, the genetic material of hepatitis B virus is frequently found to be part of the genetic material of the cancer cells. It is thought, therefore, that specific regions of the hepatitis B virus genome (genetic code) enter the genetic material of the liver cells. This hepatitis B virus genetic material may then disrupt the normal genetic material in the liver cells, thereby causing the liver cells to become cancerous.
