German term or phrase: MDK

I know this abbreviation has been discussed before, but if it means "Medizinischer Dienst der Krankenversicherung", I am finding it difficult to fit into the context. German Certificate of Disability : AU:

"Es wird die Einleitung folgender besonderer Maßnahmen durch die Krankenkasse für erforderlich gehalten (z.B. Badekur, Heilverfahren, ***MDK***."

"The introduction of the following special treatments must be approved by the Health Insurance Fund (for example, balneotherapy, other therapies, MDK..."

Might it be implied here, "assessment by MDK"?

Your assumption is correct - MDK stands for "Assessment/evaluation performed by the MDK"
I would add an explanation in brackets or as a footnote, e.g.
(MDK =Medical Review Board of the Statutory Health Insurance Funds),
which seems to be the most commonly used English translation, e.g. see

*Assessment* passt hier ganz gut. Die Institutionsbezeichnung (MDK) würde ich nicht übersetzen, sondern erklären.
