Why do you *hate* it, lirka? A *method* (e.g. application of a cream/ointment/lotion - whatever the specification is) can be carried out in different *modes*:small-area or extensive, special applicator or fingertips, twice daily or less frequent, high or low dose, clockwise or not ;-).
So, *modes of application* sounds just fine, at least in my perception.
