Hospitation

English translation: visiting physician program

German to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical: Health Care
German term or phrase: Hospitation
On a physician's CV: "Hospitation (3 Monate) an der Abt. f. Pneumologie der Med. Hochschule Hannover"

There's a definition of the term on
http://www.rhetorik.ch/Verbesserung/Hospitation.html

but I have no idea what to call it in English.

Please bear with me, there'll be more questions to come :-)

English translation:visiting physician program
Explanation:
For your particular context, I would write "participated in a 3-month visiting physician program"

IMO, "intern" would not really fit because it implies that the physician is still in training( working towards his specialist license). The definition you provided indicates that these are fully trained and licensed doctors.Have a look at the links below!

"Visiting Physician Program

Definition
A Visiting Physician is a medical doctor with recent patient primary care experience who rotates through the clinical services of the Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) units for two to six months[...]The Visiting Physician works under an Attending Physician. In addition to being the primary care physician, responsibilities include patient care procedures[...]The Visiting Physician may also rotate through the Outpatient Department (OPD)."

And another source:

"Visiting Physician Requirements

(1) The Board of Medical Examiners may grant approval for a visiting physician to practice in a hospital in the state of Oregon in order to obtain or provide training for a period up to ten days no more than three times a year. The visiting physician who requests additional time beyond the ten days, or submits more than three requests in a year, must apply for and obtain a license to practice in the state of Oregon."

BTW, I don\'t think anything with \'mentoring\' would work too well because the definition given in Trudy\'s link lists \"Mentoring\" as a specific Alternative to \"Hospitation\"

Thanks for all the excellent suggestions, more than one of which might fit, but this is what I finally settled on.

Warum nicht so einfach? Ich nehme an, die Hospitation findet im Rahmen des med. Studiums statt?
Oder vielleicht "practical training".
Viel Erfolg!

Medical clerkship

Explanation:
This is a common term at US medical schools.

From the Mayo Clinic, perhaps the best-known clinic in the US:
As a member of the Mayo health-care team, you'll:

* see patients from around the world with a wide spectrum of common and rare diseases
* work with outstanding physicians representing all the medical and surgical specialties and with eminent scientists in basic research
* learn clinical decision-making skills at the largest medical group practice in the world
* participate in the educational activities of one of the largest residency training institutions in the nation, with more than 15,000 alumni practicing throughout the world

I checked with my SO who said she did several clerkships while she was a med student and during most of them, she was merely an observer, although occasionally she was instructed to listen to hearts, palpate abdomens, etc. It helped her decide what fields she *didn\'t* want to go into. My urologist is a major mentor of medical students and frequently invites his clerks to experience \"what a healthy prostate feels like.\" Unfortunately he usually has 4-5 med students at any one time.

Explanation:
... is what I found!

http://forum.leo.org/archiv/2003_03/05/20030305173742e_en.ht...
Job shadowing takes place over a short period of time (day-week) to observe the work. Seems to me that anything else, internship, workplace training etc., implies a more hands-on situation than job shadowing, where you really only watch and listen.

Intern ( for 3 months )....

Explanation:
This refers more to post graduate studies, however, many doctors as well as students do a ' hospitation ' on a no pay basis to aquire more knowledge in many sough after fields like Pulmonary diseases. A hospitation can be done either by a medical student or an experienced doctor.

Explanation:
University teaching assistants are given the opportunity to improve their lectures, seminars, etc. with a university education specialist.
At the center of such individualized consultation are teaching and methodological issues related to ongoing courses of instruction.
