Tech/Engineering - Metallurgy / Casting
German term or phrase: Bären
This is a text listing the challenges of creating systems for dealing with dust and oxide dust. The client is a maker of ventilation systems, but this technology would be installed in an ironworks or some such:

mehrfache Zerteilung von Materialblöcken oder großen Schrotteilen mittels Sauerstofflanze oder anderen thermischen Trenngeräten zum besseren und schnelleren Einsatz der eisenhaltigen *Bären* im Schmelzofen

Ernst has 'Bärenbildung f (Hütt) / formation of skull', but I'm unsure if 'skull' fits in this instance. Anyone?

skulls
Explanation:
I love it when a website is in several languages. :-)

Gleichzeitig können Stoffe wie Bären, Schlackeeisen und andere metallische Rückstände aus dem Hüttenwerk oder auch festes Roheisen und Schrott eingesetzt werden.

At the same time skulls, splash iron, and other metallic wastes from the steel plant as well as pig iron and scrap can be charged.

Explanation:
Hi Lori - I know nothing about this subject but figured I give you what I came up with to see if it is of any use to you.

Langenscheidt Technik translates Bär as tup, salamander, ram under Fallhammerkopf. A Fallhamerbär is a drop-hammer tup.

SCLEROSCOPE TEST. A hardness test in which the loss in kinetic energy of a falling metal "tup," absorbed by indentation upon impact of the tup on the metal being tested, is indicated by the height of rebound. Return To Top
http://htna.bodycote.com/glossary/main.asp?ID=20&

In the Charpy test, the specimen is laid loosely on a support in the path of the pendulum and broken as a beam loaded at three points; the tup (striking edge) strikes the middle of the specimen, with the notch opposite the tup, that is, on the tension side. Both tests give substantially the same result with the same specimen unless the material is very ductile, a situation in which there is little interest.

Impact, Tup A falling weight (tup) impact test developed specifically for pipe and fittings. There are several variables that can be selected. See ASTM D 2444.

Explanation:
A skull is a slag lining that protects the walls of the furnace, it is basically dicalcium silicate.

According to this ref.: http://www.unileoben.ac.at/~ghiwww/dt/wiedner.pdf#search="bä...

....Die entstehende
Schlacke reagiert mit der Ausmauerung unter Bildung von hochschmelzenden Anbackungen
(sog. „Bären“).....

which would be the equivalent of a skull

Here is a ref. explaining what a skull is:

Hope this helps.

Just received the brand new 7th edition of the Stahl Eisen dictionary (ISBN 3-514-00622-9, €33) and this confirms skull (Bärenbildung: formation of a skull; Bärenausbrechstand: skull breakout stand, deskulling stand; Bär: button, skull, tup)
