Aufschmelzung/Anschmelzung
molten coating/partial melting


Explanation:
Although these terms look almost identical in German, they are in fact 2 completely different concepts:

anschmelzen = partial melting of the surface, i.e. base metal only
aufschmelzen = deposit a molten coating (e.g. spray coating), i.e. base metal + coating

The whole idea of this process is to change the microstructure of the surface layer (e.g. for hardening purposes).
