Explanation:
"Occupying force" would be pretty funny - have the Swiss ever occupied anything? I think "Besatzer" must be Schwyzerdütsch for "Besatzung".
Military equivalents are notoriously difficult, but I think "cavalry sargeant" or "tank sargeant" fits the context here. Petty officer is generally a naval term.
