Does anyone know what this is called in BEng.?
Any help especially in the next hour would be appreciated.

Having discovered the term via the above documents, googling "elevating mass" turn up plenty of official-looking hits for howitzers, field guns, tanks, and other armaments.

"The hull of the M109 has been modified so that it is the equivalent of the BAE Systems, US Combat Systems M109A3 which is compatible with the new elevating mass and the aiming system of the M109G used by the German Army."

"The existing breech and breech ring of the original M109 have been retained. The elevating mass, as modified, is interchangeable with the one on the basic M109; furthermore, the mechanical interface between the elevating mass and saddle, as well as the mountings of the optical device, do not require any modification."
