Art/Literary - Music / Trumpet
German term or phrase: Anstoß
Aus einem Trumpetenlehrgang:

Damit die Luft den Ton erzeugen kann, muss sie durch die Lippen strömen und diese in Schwingung versetzen. Du kennst diesen Mechanismus vom Buzzing. Beobachte
deine Zunge im Moment des Anstoßes: Sie liegt vor dem Anstoß innen an den Zäh-nen an und schnellt im Moment des Anstoßes („t“) wie ein sich öffnendes Ventil zurück, um der Luft freie Bahn zu verschaffen.

Clarification request(s) and response
Christine Lam: 8:29pm Sep 7, 2007: thanks, unfortunately, I only play the piano and it is not advisable to attack the ivories.....
Christine Lam: 9:19pm Sep 7, 2007: How about something with tonguing? Is this something else?
Kim Metzger: 9:24pm Sep 7, 2007: Die Zunge hilft dabei mit und steuert – ähnlich einem Ventil – den Beginn (Anstoß) und die Dauer der Töne.

attack
Explanation:
My wife has played the trumpet for 30 years, and as a translator I've had to adapt to sudden attacks while wrestling with complex German sentences.

The F-horn also requires a better & cleaner attack for every note.
Das F-Horn verlangt einen besseren sauberen Anstoss für jeden Ton.

A carefully selected Bach mouthpiece can help improve a cornet players embouchure, attack, tonguing and endurance.

additional explanation

Explanation:
The word attack is fully correct. Maybe it is a good idea to additionally explain this: It does not matter which instrument is being used. So the context from this respect is irrelevant. The piano, violin, flute, clarinet, guitar etc. Even the human voice itself. Attack is a common word for explaining the "timing" of a note being produced. How and which instrument is being used matters when it comes to the technique of producing the note respectively the sound. So attack changes its tone, not pitch amplitude, tempo etc. If the player of an instrument is gifted they will not glide to other notes without the proper fading after attack of the original. If they do it will sound disharmonious as well as out of timing to the less gifted ear. If the player of the instrument is very bad with playing by notes the attack issue turns more and more into a tempo problem rather than a tone and pitch issue. Same with singers, timing of breath commencement and producing the note and fading according to rules of harmony will be a good step to becoming virtuoso. Provided they have a voice gifted by nature in the first place. Otherwise everyone is anyhow a bathroom singer who sounds good to themselves within the echoing effect of the walls and their own ears.
