German to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Music / from a novel
German term or phrase: sphärische Musik
This is from the description of hypnotherapy in a novel. Is there an alternative to "music of the spheres" that would be more easily understood by a general reader? Thanks!

"Ms Rankin ging zum Tisch und schaltete den CD-Player ein. Ruhige, sphärische Musik erklang. Eine tiefe, dumpfe Trommel schlug langsam den Takt, jeweils mit zwei unterschiedlich lauten Schlägen, ähnlich dem Schlagen eines Herzens."

neutral  gangels: To me, 'ambient music' is what is called 'elevator music' (Mantovani type), while 'spherical (mood) music generally does usually not carry a tune, just soothing sound combinations

-> actually, this is exactly how I would define ambient music

agree  Andrew Swift: Definitely not Mantovani. More Brian Eno.

ethereal music

Explanation:
As proposed through my discussion entry.

"Ethereal music" specifically in the context of hypnosis:

The following sources hint to Mesmer himself using such music, and to the meaning of "ether", as used in aenesthesia, being related to the "mesmerizing" effects:
