German to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Music / popular music
German term or phrase:Nischenmusik (or Nischen-Musik)
From a textbook on management in the music industry, discussing an analysis of the most popular music styles as determined by the turnover generated:
Besonders stark gestiegen sind im Jahr 2008 die Genres Religious und nischenmusik, die unter Others zusammengefasst ist.
I'm afraid I have no familiarity with this musical genre at all. The direct translation "Nische music" in English receives so few google hits that I am reluctant to use it.
Explanation: So you could translate "die Genres Religious und nischenmusik" as the religious and niche-market genres.
Problem: niche market music can often sell in the thousands (ie: new age, early classical, Indian classical, heavy metal, baroque & renaissance classical), but expensive distribution network and physical costs make traditional CD pressings expensive and a very risky investment.
Solution: aggressively pursue personal contacts, especially for well regarded, niche-genre artists. There are many good artists in these genres, recording costs are low, but poor distribution network and high costs limits artist's possibilities, increase their frustration. http://magnatune.com/info/plan
Here in the U.S., the style sells more than Latin pop, rock, and tropical acts combined. It’s one
of few genres that haven’t suffered significantly in the music industry’s recent downturn. Yet despite ts massive U.S. appeal, Mexican regional remains ghettoized within the music industry as an “ethnic” niche-market genre whose domestic audience is never expected to reach beyond immigrant communities in the West and Southwest. The music receives little promotional backing from record labels and garners the fewest licensing and sponsorship deals of all Latin genres, despite the fact that it outsells them all. Its standing in the Latin music community is so low that Mexican regional artists boycotted the inaugural Latin Grammys in 2000 to protest their vast under-representation in the show’s award categories.
Niche music generates 188,000 google hits. Your low number of hits may be explained by the German spelling of "Nische" as you indicate above. :)

niche music
Explanation: File sharing allows individuals to download music, which is unique to their listening tastes. This encourages individuals to form their own musical identities, which are less influenced from commercial interests such as radio stations and major record labels. These individual music tastes have meant music, which had previously received little attention, has gained much more attention with potential audiences. This music known, as niche music does not include any set genre, it instead is made up of non-mainstream music of from any possible genre. http://wiki.media-culture.org.au/index.php/Music_File_Sharin...
