aus dritter hand stammen was acquired at third hand

Explanation:
XXX's text is as it were a third-hand one

XXX's text was acquired as it were at third hand

A secondhand text is one borrowed/obtained from some-one else; a third-hand one is one that that other person has themselves acquired from a different person. There term third hand works equally well in English and German, I think, although you need something different for the verb stammen

agree babbelbekkie: Although I'd simply write "was acquired third-hand, without the "at", or simply "is third-hand"
