I did not intent to claim that this is the *only* possible version .... and I will always follow the opinion of English natives in that. Possibly the version 'contaminated with bacteria' sounds more natural to English ears. ;-)

However my point is that - even if you wish to translate *verkeimt* only, you do not catch the complete meaning by using contaminated IMO. The -keimt part in the term indicates that there are germs, pathogens in the water. Just *contaminated* does not tell the reader --> with which substances/particles?
(Those may be toxins, particles, specific sediments, metals .... one alternative being pathogens / bacteria.)

Just 'contaminated' would mean verunreinigt, kontaminiert. Only with the addition of 'bacteria' or germs or pathogens, the meaning is 'verkeimt' in German.
