agree  BirgitBerlin: This is what we would call a "Schmalzstulle" in Berlin. I don't find it very appetizing either. But then I am a vegetarian...

agree  David Moore: Don't forget the gherkin!

neutral  beermatt: Quite right, a Brit would understand this best. But dripping (collected fat that dripped out of a roast of any kind, often beef) is not quite Griebenfett, which is PORK fat including skin cut off the meat and fried separately, i.e. lard (cf answer below)

disagree  sylvie malich: Just clicked your reference link, a Fettbemme is not bread and dripping in any sense.

agree  uli1: "slice of bread with lard" Griebenfett: oignon and apple slices fried in lard
2 hrs

disagree  sylvie malich: No English speaker would order this on any menu! You have to appetize it up a bit to get my agree.// @beermatt: Then why is it on the menu? Whole generations grew up with it. Comfort food? shrug.
4 hrs

agree  beermatt: Yes, exactly. Though I don't completely agree with uli1: Griebenfett may, but does not necessarily contain apple & onion. Main thing is the 'Grieben', the crispy bits of pig skin. To Sylvie: I can't imagine many Germans ordering sth. called "Fettbemmchen"

lard with crackling on bread

Explanation:
I found quite a few references to "crackling fat" or "crackling spread" for Griebenschmalz on the www.
