Nutrition / nutrition
German term or phrase: Nährmittel
From the same list of foods contributing to sugar consumption. I remember that things like corn starch or vanilla sugar (all those dry baking ingredients belonged into that category, but what is the correct English/American term?
Sigrid Junkermann
United States
cereal products
Explanation:
My Duden Universalwörterbuch has:

Nährstoff = für Aufbau und Erhaltung von Organismen notwendiger Stoff
This would be nutrient, though I don’t think this is what is meant here.

Nährmittel = aus Getreide gewonnene Produkte außer Mehl (z.B. Grieß, Haferflocken, Teigwaren, Puddingpulver)

Another definition of Nährmittel includes flour:
Zu der Gruppe der Nährmittel zählen (DGE 2000):
Weizenmehl: Feinmehl, Vollkornmehl
Reis: Reis geschält, ungeschält
Getreidekörner: Weizen, Hirse, Mais, Gerste, Grünkern
Sonstige Getreideerzeugnisse: Weizenflocken, -grieß, -schrot, -kleie, Haferflocken, Maisgrieß, Grünkernschrot
Teigwaren: Eier-, Vollkornteigwaren, Teigwaren aus Hartweizengrieß
Sonstige Nährmittel: Weizen-, Maisstärke, Müsli, Puffreis, Pudding-,
Soßenpulver, Instantsuppen

So yes, cereal products seems to cover it!

To Narasimhan:
Yes, I was surprised to get the points as much as you were! My answer was merely intended to add further explanation to your perfectly correct answer. Reading perhaps between the lines, as well as the other answers given, I felt that an authoritative definition of Nährmittel was needed (also to distinguish it from Nährstoff, Nahrungsmittel) to back up the translation. Unfortunately, there is never enough room in the agree/disagree box for lengthy comments.
On a more general note, it is not uncommon for an asker to be faced with several almost identical answers, and for the first of these answers NOT to be picked. I suppose it does come down to which answer the asker finds \'most helpful\', and this can depend not only on the translation given but also on how convincing the explanation is and any references given.
Also, have a look through the forum discussion topics - I\'m sure this problem has been brought up before.

neutral EdithK: Well, sugars and corn starches are the opposite of nutrients. Nährmittel is used in a different context here.

agree gangels: Dextrose/glucose and starches are nutrients, too, Edith. Then there are additives (vitamins, beta blockers etc). Nutrients is broad enough to cover all

Explanation:
Congratulations to Nicole getting the grade. But the same answer was suggested by me some 2 hours earlier than Nicole's entry. Even Nicole mentioned this fact in her comments to my answer. Am I missing something here? I was under the impression, the first person to give the correct answer gets the credit. Perhaps the explanations too play a part?
