Brockhaus on 'Hallenkirche':
Kirchentyp aus mehreren etwa gleich hohen Schiffen, wobei die inneren Stützen nur Lasten, aber keinen Gewölbeschub tragen. Hallenkirchen erhalten ihre Beleuchtung vom Chor, der seit 1300 meist als Hallenchor, das heißt in etwa gleicher Höhe wie das Schiff, ausgebildet ist, oder von einem Westfenster sowie von den nun größeren Fenstern der Seitenschiffe. Der Chor wurde auch als Umgangschor ausgebildet. Häufig fehlen bei den Hallenkirchen die Türme, die Front wird von einer breiten Fassade bestimmt.
